What Should I expect following my child’s circumcision?
Some babies may be irritable for one to two days, you should be able to settle him down in the usual way you do, e.g., cuddling him, feeding, changing diaper etc. You would be given a weight specific dose of Tylenol that you can give your son should he need it.
There is stool covering the head of the penis:
During your visit, the nurse would show you how to clean this during the diaper change. Simply wash away with clean warm water, taking care not to disrupt the healing process.
There is swelling of the penis, what do I do?
Penile swelling following circumcision is not uncommon, it will resolve in 48 – 72hrs.
When can my son have a bath?
Most babies can start having a bath after 72hrs, please speak with your doctor after the procedure. You can however sponge down your baby everyday till then.
Gauze got stuck to penile head or wound, what do I do?
Please soak the gauze in clean warm water and gently remove after a few minutes.
There is bleeding following the procedure, what do I do?
The process to control bleeding would have been demonstrated to you during your visit. Simply hold the penis as demonstrated for 5 minutes, repeat for a further 5 minutes if bleeding persist. If the bleeding does not stop, proceed to nearest emergency room or call our office.
The foreskin or membrane seems to cover the head of the penis again
Please contact our office for an assessment, the membrane may require some adjustment.
The head of the penis or the base of the penis is blue, purple or pale.
This is normal it will improve in 48 – 72 hrs.
Does it hurt to urinate?
Urination is not expected to hurt.
Do I need any special precaution with carrying my newborn or infant?
No, you may carry your son in the usual manner you have always done. Take care not to bump the groin area for the first 48hrs.
