Do I qualify for the $10k/$50k loan forgiveness that’s in the daily news?

While there is continued talk and debate regarding mass loan forgiveness or cancellation, nothing as of yet been finalized. We continuously monitor the news and changes regarding this industry and keep our valued clients updated.

Can I do this through my servicer for free?

Yes, all borrowers have the ability to manage their own programs, applications, requirements and regulations related to their loan. Borrowers also have the ability to retain help to manage the above. This is very similar to preparing and filing your own taxes or hiring a tax specialist to assist you. Often times hiring a specialist can provide more monetary value as this is their expertise.

How long will I have to pay on my student loans?

Depending on the repayment option you choose will determine the length of time you will be paying on your student loans. Average time frames range between 10 & 30 years.

Forgiveness, Cancellation and Discharge FAQs

What is the difference between Forgiveness, Cancellation, and Discharge? The terms forgiveness, cancellation, and discharge have similar meanings, but are used in different ways. If you’re no longer required to make payments on your loans due to your job, this is generally called forgiveness or cancellation. If you’re no longer required to make payments on your loans due to other circumstances, such as a total and permanent disability or the closure of the school where you received your loans, this is generally called discharge. ( What types of Forgiveness, Cancellation, and Discharge are there? There are various types available for the different types of federal loans. Some of the most popular are:

  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)
  • Borrower Defense to Repayment, and
  • Total and Permanent Disability Discharge.
PSLF Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) is available for Direct Loans only. If you are employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, you may be able to receive loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program. PSLF forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer. You may be eligible for discharge of your federal student loans based on borrower defense to repayment if you took out the loans to attend a school and the school did something or failed to do something related to your loan or to the educational services that the loan was intended to pay for. The specific requirements to qualify for a borrower defense to repayment discharge vary depending on when you received your loan.
